Craig Herbertson & Ed Westerdale Hearts of Glory (Craig Herbertson) 4:37 Produced by Craig Herbertson and Guntmar Feuerstein |
July 1st, 1916, was Edinburgh's worst day since the catastrophic battle of Flodden in 1513. In the first battle of the Somme it was only a matter of minutes before the British Army saw wounded, dead or missing some sixty thousand men, among whom were 12 officers and over 600 men of McCrae's battalion (the 16th Royal Scots). They had enlisted voluntarily under the leadership of the charismatic Sir George McCrae, partly in response to pressure against young sportsmen not 'doing their bit' for the war effort. They were affectionately known as 'The Sporting Battalion' Their story is told in "McCrae's Battalion" by Jack Alexander www.mainstreampublishing.com |
